Promotional photography for theatre

The lead image for any show will define the audience’s expectations, and must be congruent with the writer’s and director’s intentions. When creating promotional images for theatre I talk with members of the creative team and get their personal take on what the play means and how they envisage an audience appreciating it. I then construct a creative brief which I share with the team before the shoot, so that I can get their feedback and work this into my concept.

Actor portraits

My portraits of actors do not follow the traditional, prescribed expectations for actor headshots. I work with the sitter to create a personal, artistic image that will add a unique impression to any portfolio. As well as working with actors, I have also photographed producers, directors and writers for theatre.

Rehearsal and production photography

With a background in humanist photojournalism, my approach to rehearsal photography is led by action, composition, and human compassion. My aim is to capture the essence of a performance by recording its unique moments in a way that also represents the mood of the whole piece.

Theatre photography: Client review

I am writing this to extend my unqualified recommendation of Josh Jones for portraits and headshots. Josh created the promotional artwork for my recent off-Broadway play, The Three Times She Knocked, and it was truly unique and stunning – the play sold out every night of its run. I was so impressed that I retained him to create a new professional portrait of me, and the work he produced was once again stellar. What impressed me most in both instances is that he dug in deep to understand his subject before proceeding, and thus the photographs reflected and commented upon his subject’s essence and character. As an added bonus, Josh is delightfully congenial and easygoing – a pleasure to know and work with in every way.
